The big leaf maple is native to stream banks and moist canyons from southern Alaska to the foothills of California. It is a dense shade tree that grows 30 to 75 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. It has large three to five lobed leaves that are 6 to 15 inches wide, sometimes bigger on young, vigorous saplings. The leaves turn from medium green to a spectacular yellow color in the fall in cool areas. They have small greenish yellow spring flowers followed by tawny winged seeds hanging in long, chainlike clusters. They grow in zones 2-9 and 14-24.
