Washington DC

  • Giant sequoia growing on the Northwest Capitol lawn. "They are doing major construction work in that area now and it is surrounded by protective fencing. That tree has a well-documented history...it was donated and planted in 1966 by the Cherokee Nation Indians in honor of Sequoyah - who created the Cherokee Syllabary allowing written communication". Thanks to Jon Mansfield for sending us this updated picture of the giant sequoia growing at the Capitol. It's wonderful to see that these trees are still growing well in 2016.

  • Another view of the giant sequoia growing in the northwest part of the Capitol grounds sent to us by Jon Mansfield.

  • “Here is the photo of the giant sequoia growing on the south end lawn of the US Capitol building in Washington DC (just east of the US Botanic Garden). I do not know the history of this tree but I suspect it was donated by a California congressman many years ago (~1900) - states often make these types of donations as this is a well-respected arboretum of sorts”. Thanks to Jon Mansfield for sending us this updated picture taken in August 2016 of the giant sequoia growing on the south lawn of the Capitol.

  • Capital Grounds tree - Giant sequoia near the Capital building taken by Blake Caldwell during visit in Sept. 2008. Thank you Blake.

  • Capitol Grounds Giant Sequoia - "On our vacation to Washington, D.C. last summer, I got an unexpected pleasant surprise when we visited the Capitol Building. As we were walking to the building I noticed an odd looking tree off by itself which turned out to be a giant sequoia." Thanks to Blake Caldwell for this photo taken in September 2008.
